Boho Braids Hairstyles

Boho braids Short for bohemian braids, are a beautiful mix of traditional braiding styles and the living free bohemian spirit. Typically these braids feature curly or wavy hair extensions, giving the look one side of hair that’s curly, while the other side is a little bit more thick and even straight, creating a textured, voluminous look that’s very elegant. This style is chosen by many because of the whole am luxury look it brings and the mix-up of natural looking gradually hair with the braids. One reason I do boho braids is because they can be styled many different ways, like long and flowing or intricate updos, and look good when wet.

Choose The Right Hair Type of Boho Braids

What type of hair you use plays a major role in the boho braid look. With boho braids, you’ll choose two types of hair. Each of the types of hair will be for the braids and the other is for the loose waves you see in the style. But, you’ll notice that most people mostly go with kinky textured hair for the braids and human hair for the loose waves, but that’s just the style. The best tip that I can give you is when someone asks you for some hair to use that is going to create your style they’ll know the best hair to give you because they are your hair stylist.

Here are some popular options:

  • Kanekalon Hair: This synthetic hair is a favorite for braiding because it’s lightweight, affordable, and comes in a wide range of colors. It’s also easy to blend with your natural hair and can be styled with heat.
  • Marley Hair: Known for its texture and volume, Marley hair is perfect for creating a more natural, afro-inspired look. It’s slightly coarser than Kanekalon hair, giving your boho braids a fuller, more textured appearance.
  • Human Hair: If you’re looking for the most natural and long-lasting option, human hair is the way to go. It can be washed, styled, and treated just like your own hair, making it a versatile choice for boho braids.

Prepare Your Hair

Make sure your real hair is taken care of first and as always, if you’re doing braids, wigs, sew-ins etc as you would want, make sure you’re not [getting it braided up] and you’re not using other people’s weave. In some cases, depending your stylist, you can go to the salon and he/she will prepare your hair in the best way for maintaining healthy hair with your boho braids style. But in other cases, you’ll have to prepare your hair ahead of time.

  • Cleanse and Deep Condition: Start with clean, well-moisturized hair. A deep conditioning treatment will help strengthen your hair and prevent breakage. Do a deep conditioning process at least three days prior to getting your hair braided.
  • Detangle: Make sure your hair is thoroughly detangled to make the braiding process smoother and less painful. Most stylists will indicate that your hair needs to be blow dried and completely detangled prior to coming in for the appointment. Some stylists will even charge an extra fee if your hair is not detangled as it adds extra time to your appointment.
  • Trim Your Ends: Trimming any split ends will ensure your hair looks healthy and neat once braided and will help with further breakage.

Getting your hair prepped for boho braids can be a lot to do at home. If you can afford it and have the time, I highly recommend having your hair prepped by a hairstylist about two weeks ahead of your braiding appointment to have any necessary natural hair treatments done and for any trimming that is needed.

Choose The Right Length And Style Boho Braids

With boho braided hairstyles, you get to customize to your style and have a choice on the length you like your hair to be. You can select that if you want something shorter in the middle back style, or if you want all the way down to your butt. Just keep in mind that the longer the style, the more the investment. Additionally, you’ll also have to be aware of the lengths that your chosen hairstylist does.

Here are some options to consider:

  • Length: Decide whether you want long, flowing braids or a shorter, more manageable length. Long braids are stunning but require more maintenance, while shorter braids are easier to manage and style.
  • Parting: Think about how you want your hair to be parted. Middle parts, side parts, and even zig-zag parts can change the overall look of your braids.
  • Accessories: Adding beads, shells, or colorful threads can enhance your boho braids and give them a unique touch.

Maintenance And Care

Now that you have those stunning boho braids, we can’t have you losing out! Proper maintenance is needed to maintain those boho braids to keep them looking fresh and fabulous. It’s not a once you’re done get your hair done then leave it alone braid style. However it does take maintenance and care so that your natural hair stays healthy and the style. There have been many instances where I have heard of women who have gotten boho braids and have needed to take them out within two weeks because they weren’t properly maintained. But this still can last for longer than a couple of weeks if proper maintenance and car is done.

  • Moisturize: Keep your scalp and braids moisturized with a light oil or braid spray. This will prevent dryness and itching. I highly recommend an oil sheen spray for spraying the braids and olive oil with a dropper for your scalp.
  • Protect at Night: Use a silk or satin scarf or bonnet to protect your braids while you sleep. This helps reduce frizz and breakage.
  • Cleanse Gently: If you need to wash your braids, do so gently with a diluted shampoo. Focus on your scalp and rinse thoroughly to avoid product buildup.
